IEB Vision of EDI

Reality Today - Islands of EDI

The largest Retailers partially integrated on 'Order to Cash' with large suppliers and a few smaller forced into EDI. Most have 100-year backlogs ... waiting.

Global Logistics companies integrated with themselves and a few large Retailers.

Manufacturing and Customs far behind.

In the 80s EDI promised immersive integration... we wait.
The current state of EDI

Retail Industry

Retail is busy onboarding new partners constantly. However, it takes so long they will never finish AND only the largest are allowed to participate.

Many demand Partners do EDI as they wish. Industries should collaborate within EDI standards to deploy following industry guidelines. Otherwise, custom onboarding will take too long.

Only the very large and courageous attempt EDI outside their industry.

Retail is currently devouring themselves with chargebacks. Huge mistake the market will correct viciously someday.

Global Logistics

... may be the largest industry. It requires 3 or 4 times the transactions as order to cash. These industries need to Integrate but apparently must wait for the 100-year Retail backlogs to clear.

Shipping and Logistics appear to be growing faster than other industries due to the massive need for shipping as the world goes on-line. Onboarding takes even longer than Order to Cash.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing companies do EDI much more effectively than the large Retailers. This is partly due to the 'supplier vs. customer' dynamic. Suppliers live in a more competitive world and must be focused and lean. Large corporations can afford to do things wrong seemingly forever with little pain.

When the playing field is leveled and EDI realizes its original promise Manufacturing will be an Integration leader.

Customs

Much like Manufacturing, Customs is dependent on the other industries. The few who decide they want to process Freight and Duty integrate. Customs must wait for EDI to mature.
